How to Fight Back Against Homework Procrastination

Homework isn't exactly an exciting activity, so it makes sense that students simply don't want to do it. Even so, it has to get done. If your child puts it off to the last moment and then rushes to get it done, use these tips to help them avoid homework procrastination.

Start With a Plan

Without a homework plan, your child will be left without a guide to follow. Before they start working on random assignments, have them create a to-do list where they list all the assignments they have to get done in order of importance. This will not only ensure they don't miss an assignment, but it will also help them get the most stressful tasks out of the way first.

Schedule Breaks

Many parents tell their children that they can't get up from their desk until their work is done. This can actually be counterproductive, so avoid doing this. Instead, schedule 10 minutes breaks every so often so that your child has a chance to relax and refresh before diving back into their work. Taking a short walk or having a healthy snack while stepping away from their work can actually help them go back to their desk ready to get their work done.

Break Things Down

Procrastination can often be the result of stress and intimidation. When it comes to large projects, your child may not get to work on them because they don't even know where to start. Give them some help by showing them how to break down these tasks into smaller and easier parts. As they tackle these individual parts, their project will start to come together, helping them feel less overwhelmed and more prepared to get it done.
