Help Your Child Cope With Back-to-School Anxiety

Making the transition back to school can be stressful and anxiety inducing for children of all ages. Some anxiety is normal because of the changes your child senses may be coming. As a parent, it is important that you listen to your child and help them deal with the stress. The Tutoring Center in Lansdale has some easy tips to help ease your child's back-to-school anxiety.

Set Helpful Routines

Getting into the rhythm of daily routines can help your child become more comfortable and lose some of their anxiety. At least a week before school starts, get your child in the habit of going to bed at a reasonable hour and waking up early. Set a bedtime routine that will help them fall asleep and a morning routine to help them get ready for the day. Make sure your child is following regular eating habits and is eating healthy foods that won't make the anxiety worse.

Talk About Their Worries

If you notice your child is having trouble dealing with their back-to-school anxiety, sit them down and have a chat. Ask your child to share their fears and worries about school. Answer as many questions as possible and try to come up with solutions together for other issues they may have. Make sure your child knows they're not alone, many other students have the same questions and worries.

Remember the Positives

Once you've answered some of your child's questions about school, get them talking about what they're looking forward to. Remind your child that they will get to see their friends at school and can even make new friends. Get them excited over their new school supplies and new learning opportunities. Have them list their favorite things to do at school in order to help get them excited for the new school year.
